Investor Relations Analyst
Spire is seeking an Investor Relations Analyst to work in the Finance organization at the main office in St. Louis. This position will be responsible for providing analytical and other support for Spire's investor relations programs to communicate our strategy, performance and investment thesis to investors and security analysts.
Duties and Responsibilities
Identify, evaluate and proactively influence analyst earnings estimates, opinions, and research
: Through regular proactive outreach to sell-side analysts, collect, and discuss with them as needed, their earnings models relative to Spire's guidance. Maintain analysis of analysts' forecasts compared to Spire's quarterly and fiscal year actual earnings and forecast results (from FP&A). Prepare summary of key differences and identify discussion points for follow-ups with the analysts.
: Using FactSet database, combined with regular review of published reports, maintain an updated summary of analysts' quarterly and annual earnings estimates, opinions and price targets for Spire. As needed, work with FactSet and analysts to ensure FactSet information accurately reflects current estimates.
: Track analyst research on Spire, peers and general industry topics. Prepare summaries for distribution to senior management (LC) and Board of Directors as appropriate.
Analyze SR's stock performance, valuation and shareholder base
: Using Ipreo and FactSet databases and tools, maintain an analysis of Spire's shareholder base including composition (institutional percentage), changes in holders, and breakouts by style, portfolio turnover, active vs. Passive, activist, socially-responsible, and other criteria
: Prepare regular "IR Update" reports (monthly for LC and quarterly for Board of Directors) that include SR stock performance, valuation, analyst ratings, dividend yield, short interest and other metrics compared to peers
Maintain competitive intelligence on industry peers
: On a quarterly basis, summarize and distribute to LC and other Spire leaders the earnings announcements of peer companies, including questions raised on their conference calls
: Monitor news, announcements, investor presentations and other information issued by peers, particularly regarding performance, strategy, guidance and outlook
: Monitor news and developments, including acquisitions, investments, regulatory developments and other issues impacting gas utility peers, utilities in general and the broader energy market
Develop and maintain updated list of prospective investors (targets)
: Spearhead Spire's investor targeting program by identifying institutional investors whose investment style and portfolio mandate align with Spire's investment characteristics.
: Develop prioritized list of investor targets (using Ipreo database) for use in planning of annual calendar of investor meetings and roadshows to various cities
: Track meetings with targets and monitor changes in their shareholdings. Assess effectiveness of targeting program efforts, and recommend modifications as needed.
Develop materials for quarterly earnings announcements
: Work with accounting, financial reporting and finance teams to gather, analyze and synthesize operational and financial information for quarterly earnings announcements (and summaries in investor presentation). Assist in development of materials for earnings announcements including summary financial tables and charts, analysis of results and explanation of variances, and other facts and figures for news release, scripts and slides. Prepare initial drafts of CFO conference call script and webcast slides.
: Maintain an updated Q&A document that identifies and anticipates issues and questions from the financial community. Work cross-functionally to gather responses and background information from internal subject matter experts.
Gather information and prepare other analyses and presentations as needed
: Working with internal team, lead the development and updating of Spire's Investor Presentation used for investor conferences, AGA Financial Forum, non-deal roadshows and investor visits
: Provide support for external communications and presentations related to debt and equity financings and rating agency updates
: Prepare "Peer Market Analysis" and TSR calculations for regular Board updates and other peer analysis as required. Assist with periodic evaluation and update of peer group, as needed.
: Collect information, operating metrics and statistics needed for annual report narrative and graphics (charts).
: Provide information needed for employees communications articles and intranet updates on earnings results, stock performance and other related topics
Required knowledge, skill and abilities:
: Minimum 5 years of experience in accounting, finance, treasury or financial analysis preferably within a publicly traded company
: Strong analytical skills required in addition to experience with extracting, manipulating, organizing and summarizing information from databases and information systems
: Proficiency in use of Microsoft Office suite, particularly PowerPoint and advanced features of Excel
: Solid written, oral and interpersonal communications skills and ability to create presentations to external audiences as well as Spire's LC and Board of Directors
: Experience in investor relations and in the natural gas, energy or utility industries preferred but not required
: Basic understanding of capital markets and investments
: Bachelor's degree in business-related discipline; accounting or finance strongly preferred
: Advanced degrees or certifications (MBA, CPA, CFA) beneficial but not required

Physical demands, work environment and work schedule:
: Work is performed in a normal office environment, without significant physical demands
: Work is focused on analysis and preparing reports and presentation, which involves heavy use of a computer while seated at a desk for extended periods of time
: Typical work hours are 40+ per week with some additional hours, including weekday evenings and weekend days, required during peak times. These include periods in advance of quarterly board meetings, earnings announcements, and investor conferences/meetings.
